A eight days hiking/climbing holiday in and around Mexico city and towards the Eastern border with Veracruz. Combined with the hikes and climbs will will be visiting the historic cities of Humantla and Cholula.
Your hikes in the first days will include Malinche and Nevado Toluca, the 5th and 4th highest peaks in Mexico. These are all single day walks of moderate difficulty and suitable to any regular hill walkers of average ability. There are moderate scrambles on each hike but of little difficulty. All the hikes are quite different and offer stunning vistas. This particularly applies to Nevado Toluca.
The climbs of Izta and Pico de Orizaba are a different matter. Izta is the 3rd highest peak in Mexico and a beautiful undulating ridge of a mountain to climb that has snow and glacier crossings underfoot. Though a non-technical peak it is at altitude (5,230m) and it is a long climb that necessitates an early 2am start with ice axe and crampon use in the latter stages of the climb. It is in the very hard category and suitable for regular hill walkers who are in very good condition. To climb Izta in one day can take anything between 14 to 17 hours up and down but the ascent can be modified to the ability of the clients i.e. a high camp.
The beauty of this mountain cannot be exemplified enough however. At sunrise you should arrive at the crucial ‘old refuge’ viewing point where in front of you will be the stunning vista of the craggy ridges leading to the summit in the distance and behind you will be Popocatepetl volcano (2nd highest peak in Mexico-closed due to its activity) smoking away like an old man with a cigar. This viewpoint is truly unique and will become part of your memories of a lifetime.
Pico de Orizaba a few days later will be a different mountain altogether. Intoxicated by your climb of Izta a few days ago you will get to Pico to see that it is a classic volcano cone entirely different to Izta. Pico, at 5,636m, is also the highest mountain in Mexico, the 3rd highest mountain in North America and one of the 7 Volcanic Summits of the world.
Pico again is a non-technical mountain but due to the upper slopes being a glacier ice axes and crampons will again be used and you will possibly be roped to your guide. The ascent of Pico is another early 2am start and it will take you between 12-15 hours up and down. Sunrise will see you walking up the higher forty-degree slopes towards the stunning summit that is Pico. Again this is a mountain that requires the same fitness and ability of Izta but the effort is well worth it as you get another stunning sunrise on the roof of one of North America’s highest peaks.
